I agree with pretty much 100 % of what you're saying. But in a two party system I'm seriously asking myself "how much of the change we so desperately need right now is feasible?"
We cannot fall short, but if there is literally no other candidate on the ballot than that one Democrat, I absolutely think we should vote for that Democrat. Why? Because so far every Republican candidate is a hundred times worse. (At least with all the candidates in my district...)
I’m with Jared, I am sort of looking forward to the fall. How do we build a collective that won’t just end up replicating the status quo? I think that only being shaken with the worst of what is to come will convince this country to build something different. Anything else feels like we are just kicking the can. I may feel differently tomorrow…
I would love to hear what Jared and Danielle believe the solution is. The Republican Party is pretty much turned into a fascist party. The only alternative is the Democratic Party, led by people who despise and won’t listen to their own constituents. They’re all corrupt on some level. There are a few outliers, calling for a more socialistic democracy or who lean more progressive. But Danielle and Jared are correct: there is no “savior” in the form of a political system or individual that is going to solve everything in 2027 or 2029. Our vote is very important but it’s not going to provide the government we need in the short term. I agree that the system is flawed, corrupt, broken, collapsing. But what will we have if/when it finally falls to pieces? What will rise out the rubble? We need a plan. If a capitalistic democracy is our demise, what do we replace it with? How do we implement a better society, system, government? Do we throw out the Constitution and completely start over? Do we give up on democracy all together? What do we replace capitalism with? Communism look good on paper, but hasn’t been very successful in reality. Besides, I don’t like the idea of pooling all our resources and depending on a few people to do the right thing for a country as large as ours- that’s never worked out well, no matter how idealistic the leaders are. It may have worked for New Testament Christianity for local communities, but I don’t see it working large scale. Socialism? Again, looks great on paper, but pure socialism isn’t super successful in reality.
Jared, what do you propose? We are in agreement that what we have now isn’t working for anyone, except the rich and powerful. What is your solution? What is your plan?
