The End of the Road: Marjorie Taylor Greene and the Freedom Caucus
MTG has been reportedly booted from the Freedom Caucus.
A couple of quick notes. Tonight (Thursday, July 6th at 8pm eastern) I’ll be co-hosting a live recording of The Muckrake Podcast. These are good times. We’ll be talking about Marjorie Taylor Greene and the Freedom Caucus, the guy Donald Trump seemingly inspired to attempt an attack on Barack Obama, the cocaine discovered at the White House, and taking questions from the audience. This event will be open to all patrons of the show. If you haven’t already, head over to Patreon.com/Muckrakepodcast to get in on the fun and also support the podcast.
I also wanted to say thank you for recent subscribers to this newsletter. It is growing by the day and this support is necessary. As I’ve mentioned, this is one of the main sources of income now that I have left academia to carry out this analysis fulltime. Thank you so much, and if you haven’t already, please subscribe in order to gain access to exclusive articles, podcasts, videos, Q&A’s, and more.
Reports have been breaking this afternoon that Marjorie Taylor Greene has been removed from the House Freedom Caucus (HFC) following a vote to jettison her from the group. It’s a big development that tells us more about the state of the GOP than anything else, but also gives us insight into our current state of politics.
For some it might be surprising, but following a moment in late June where cameras in the halls of Congress caught a quick glimpse of something ugly transpiring on the floor, it was pretty clear things were heading in some direction.
A heated exchange between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert had escalated in full sight of the world, leading to reports that a disagreement led to Greene calling Boebert “a little bitch.” Though explosive and attention-grabbing, the spat had been stewing for a while. Greene’s blossoming relationship with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy created tensions within the group that spilled into public with the ludicrous and self-destructive debt ceiling crisis. McCarthy’s rise to the position had been helped along with Greene’s sudden turn as an institutional figure, betraying a deep, deep radicalization within the GOP.
And so, what does this all mean?
