THE MIDNIGHT KINGDOM IS OUT IN THE WORLD

Well, here we are.

THE MIDNIGHT KINGDOM: A HISTORY OF POWER, PARANOIA, AND THE COMING CRISIS is out in the world.

I’m spending my day on a radio/podcast/interview tour and am possibly going to show up on your TVs later tonight. But I wanted to say a few words and address a couple of things.

First of all, thank you. Writing this book was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It was draining. When I set out to do it, I knew that relearning the history of the modern world was going to be hard and intensive, but I really had no idea. What I discovered changed everything for me. How I looked at modern life, how I looked at my own experiences, those of my family, politics, economics, psychology, and myself. It also changed how I looked at the future forever and made me both more optimistic and more dedicated to fighting for a better tomorrow.

It would not have happened if it wasn’t for the support and kindness of these communities I’ve been working to build in the past few years. Since reporting on Trump rallies in 2016 I have been living through pretty constant harassment and stalking by members of the Neo-Nazi New Right and I needed these communities to retain my hope and, honestly, my sanity. What I found were thousands of people. Kind, caring, good people. And they believe in a better world, in each other. And, for some reason that I’m still trying to wrap my head around, they have believed in me.

That is humbling, and in my hardest moments it made everything possible. Thank you. For the support. For the faith. For the solidarity.

Now, I find myself in a new place with a new mission. This book is meant to be a beginning of a larger project. First we arm ourselves with knowledge and then we fight. Unfortunately, right in time for the book, Twitter was taken over by a megalomaniacal oligarch. I don’t know if you heard about it, but it’s been a trip. In recent weeks, I’ve become acutely aware that my account has been more or less muted by these controls and my posts and such basically quarantined.

I need your help. Please, if you haven’t, order The Midnight Kingdom, but also get the word out. Let your people know this information is out there, whether it’s these articles on Substack or the videos or whatever. And it’s not just me. Some good people are being silenced right now because they speak truth to power. Basically anybody who provides independent commentary or perspectives, who talks about white supremacy, economic oppression, or the gathering authoritarian threat has been more or less taken off the board.

We’ve got a fight ahead of us, and it isn’t a fair one. The concentration of wealth and capital has stacked the odds and the internet, with its controls and surveillance, makes this a whole new battle. The good news is that there are more of us than there are them. And also, we have the truth on our side, and humanity has a habit of winning despite overwhelming odds.

We are going to win this fight. We’re going to make a better future for ourselves, for our children, for our communities, and for so many people to come.

I remain hopeful because of you. I remain optimistic because of you.
