First of all, I just want to thank everyone for their support and kindness since I opened Dispatches From A Collapsing State. I’d been desperate to find somewhere I could write about the issues of the moment but, also, get more in-depth and personal with my writing. So far, I’m beyond thrilled with this format and the little community we’re forming here. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for those who encouraged me to do this and those who are along for the ride.
I gave up Twitter a few years ago because I was totally addicted, so have really appreciated seeing your essays on a regular basis without having to turn off my content blockers and get sucked into social media browsing.
Like probably many, I don't know anyone who isn't depressed or struggling in some way right now. Whether it's anti-maskers, assaults on voting rights, white nationalism, or the looming reality of climate change that too few are taking seriously, I'm curious how you and maybe other subscribers are dealing with the mental/emotional/psychological weights of these realities on a daily basis.
I read that Warren will be proposing her wealth tax. Do you think it has even a chance in hell of passing? Or are the 1% so in control of the government that there is no way it will ever happen? I read Jeff Bezos alone could have to pay $5 billion more in taxes. I think about how that could help make universal healthcare a real possiblity in this country if the super rich had to pay that extra 2% once they are over $50 million and 3% over a billion.
Jared, I know you have talked about before, but how about a deeper dive into the politics of climate change and how the issue could help confront the tremendous inequities in our country between the haves and have-nots.
This morning, 3/3, an interesting CounterPunch article was linked to in Twitter: “How the CIA Helped Crush Turkey’s Post-War Left”. What’s interesting—and frightening—is the degree to which “our country” will go to suppress popular movements. Just imagine what they have done or are doing today here and elsewhere around the world.
Perhaps for some people the question “who wants to hire me” is as much an existential question as well as a practical question. Perhaps they are struggling with the question “Why is my writing important and why does it matter?” especially in this day of information overload and excessive superficial pleasure.
I have never been into self help books but the old classic “What Color is your Parachute” provides useful and meaningful suggestions for finding one’s career path.
Here is good up-to-date review of the book.

So, what DO you get on a pizza?
And what's your opinion on Hawaiian pizza? Let's make this controversial.

What is your favorite meal (can include dessert and drinks) and if you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go first (outside of U.S.)?

What is your MBTI personality type?
Do you still write fiction, or are you solidly in a non-fiction phase? And which do you prefer to read when you're not researching a project?
When you're reading a book, do you use a bookmark or do you fold the corner of the page down?
Hey Jarod, I’m lost. Are you and Nick still doing stuff on Patreon?
Oh yeah, for sure. This is where my writing and reportage will be.
