Hey everybody, happy Saturday. I’m spending the day catching up on a few projects here and there (including a proposal for the new book, which I’ll give you all a preview of later) while also getting ready for the release of The Midnight Kingdom: A History of Power, Paranoia, and the Coming Crisis. Also, I’m preparing for the next episode of The Midnight Kingdom Lecture Series (Episode 1 is available and I’ve appreciated all the kind words and feedback - Episode 2 is going to be so much better because of it), which will get into systems of control, weaponized white supremacy, and how World War I might be a glimpse into a possible nightmarish future unless we change the world.
I am feeling optimistic. Exceedingly so. As I wrote in my Midterms takeaways, there is something incredible building. It’s going to take so much work, but I think the path we must take is increasingly clear and I am more and more convinced that the window into a better future is widening.
This Sunday (November 13th at 8pm eastern) I’ll be addressing this optimism, the path forward, and so much more. Another installment of the Bourbon Talk Political Q&A Livestream will air, and I do hope you’ll make it. Because I appreciate your support, I’m giving Substack subscribers first crack at questions. So, if you have topics or questions you’d like addressed (doesn’t have to just be Midterms or the near future) please respond to this post or shoot me an email at jysexton@gmail.com. And plan on tuning in.
I’ve heard in the past that these livestreams have a penchant for reaching people who normally don’t hear these things. I get messages from people who stumble upon them, who got them linked in an email or DM. And somehow, someway, I think they find home. If you know someone who needs to hear this stuff, please let them know or send them my way. I’m happy to field questions/emails/queries, all of that good business. It’s lifegiving.

And, if you haven’t yet, please consider becoming a subscriber to DISPATCHES FROM A COLLAPSING STATE. This venture is growing by the day and we’re nearing territory with new features and so much more. Having left academia, I depend on this support and it is so, so appreciated.
So grateful for all your work and the new lecture series! My questions: 1. It’s Saturday night and I’m seeing people exclaim over Dems “keeping the Senate.” Will you please put this in proper context viz-à-viz Sinema and Manchin? 2. I’m committed to handing Dems a mandate. ASAP. To that end, I would appreciate your recommendations for actionable first steps. Are there groups you recommend over others? Is it wiser to spend time on local, state AND federal reps, or is now the time for impact on one level? I want to plan on devoting “x” number of hours per week and will appreciate your wise guidance. Thank you!
When did you leave academia? I missed that. Are you still in Georgia?
