I didn't watch the interview, but I got the general idea from Twitter. You're right. None of this is surprising. I enjoy reading biographies of female monarchs of the Early Middle Ages up through the 18th century, but current monarchs just seem so out of place in our modern world. Their existence is so off-putting to me. Maybe it's because I'm so tired of seeing people hoard wealth while so many others suffer. My heart does break for Meghan and Harry, and I'm glad they're speaking out.

I'm self-aware enough to recognize how ridiculous it is that I watch "The Crown" for the cars and the clothes, not the colonial hangover. I opted for Stanley Tucci's food show over the interview, but good on them for speaking out. Meghan Markle shouldn't have to do white people's labor -- if the Royal Family *really* wanted to change, who's to stop them? No one. But why would they? White supremacy is a hell of a drug.

Terrific read. When you pointed out England's own mythology and exceptionalism with, "To piece together how England manifested the mythology of a “sacred empire,”...", I was reminded of the 18th century description of England's power as "this vast empire on which the sun never sets, and whose bound nature has not yet ascertained." I suppose even now in the 21st century, the sun never sets on the palace intrigue of the Royal Family.

That pretty much sums it up. Well said, and much needed. As always. Thanks Jared.

I think Harry and Meghan made the right choice to get away from all that madness. I wish them all the best. I grew up around the Dutch monarchy, much more wholesome and happy.
