I completely agree, the time to regulate AI is now. I say this as a software developer with AI experience. It is an incredible tool that holds the potential for much good, but it should be outright outlawed for making decisions affecting human lives – it has no conscience.
I’ve long believed that the first meeting that every newly-elected U.S. President takes is one where he learns the limits of his power. “You can do this, but not that. Say this, but not that. Or else…we’d hate for anything bad to happen to your family.” Capitalists, the “monied interests,” have always run the show from behind the Powerful and Terrible Wizard’s curtain.
Thanks Mr. Sexton for again giving us the view from 50,000 feet and connecting it to current and historical events.
Your analysis is among the very few that is broad enough to support a welcome belief that we are beginning to actually make sense out of how we got here.
Unfortunately, we are now living 'in' the history and do not know how it will evolve -- but we do have confidence in knowing the way we must proceed and address the root causes.
I remember not taking a breath at this scene in the movie theater so very long ago; watching this clip here again, now, I sense the portrayal of Nixon's desperation that became so obvious in his last years in office, and have some empathy for the man, now, in hindsight; and, also, think I saw that borne by his successors when they were all in attendance at his funeral. Seeing this clip again, I'm reduced, again, to tears at what we've all wrought. But I have a sixty-year-old bicycle to put back into service. Thanks, as always, for distilling the drifting vapors of 'the culture' into a bitter 'Victory Gin'
Thank you, as always, Jared for your profound and honest analysis.
Prior to reading the below article, I had never heard of "e/acc" or realized there was a component of AI developers actively rooting for human extinction.
I'm going to take some hope from the fact that no one has used nuclear weapons in war since 1945. The fact that a technology exists doesn't mean it cannot be blocked from use, if people organize sufficiently. Think about the global antinuclear movement over decades, a similar movement will be needed to gain control of AI. Some movies along the lines of Fail Safe and Dr. Strangelove wouldn't hurt either.

explains so much and is terrifying

This colors things in a bit. Thoughts?
