Along with exposing the ugly foundations of alt-right factions, it seems it is time to also re-commit to the ideals our democracy was founded on. Like Harris, Walz, and Lincoln before them, we should be celebrating the positive aspects of our fight, including the joy in fighting the good fight.
It’s good to remember that we are engaged in a battle much broader than the 2024 election. The anti-democracy team has been working toward this point for decades. And then along came The Trump. The key who unlocked and unleashed pent-up American racism and fury at destruction of the middle class. Truthfully, the folks directing MAGA fury don’t give two shits about Trump so long as he can carry them over the finish line and into power. Trump can die on January 21, 2025 and they’ve still won “legitimate” control of the future. And if they *lose* in November? Well then, see JY’s column above.
Oh, my goodness, Jared. This is of a depth of insight worthy of Wm. Shirer's "Rise and Fall..". A landslide for Harris - Walz will be necessary, but to your point, not sufficient. For me, individually, 8 years ago I canceled my online "shopping" subscription, burned down my scant-used 'social media' presence, dumped my 'smart phone's. My goal is to live more in a fashion that existed prior to The Powell Memo became part of the holy Trinity of what we actually worship and 'believe in': the Perfection of The Market. In other words: making do, with limits, wary of hubris, acknowledging my footprint in the manner that I learned as a Boy Scout fifty years ago. I recommend MacKinnon's "The Day the World Stops Shopping" as a guide, esp the chapter on the shrinking population of Sado Island, Japan. And anything by Wendell Berry. Thanks for your continued observations on this class of petty tyrants. There's not enough antacid in my cupboard to sustain what you do.
