Excellent column. I've loathed Vance since the totally hypocritical book (I don't even want to write the title). Thanks for reading the NYTimes column so that I didn't have to.
If you look at the propaganda the Nazis put out during the war, they weren't trying to convince Londoners or American soldiers that Hitler was wonderful, just that the war was unwinnable, in fact was already lost, and you should just give up. Vance is just Lord Haw Haw for the 21st Century.
I don't know, what did the rural poor of Ohio think of Vance, did they vote for him? Did they see his book as a betrayal? If some liberal who grew up in actual poverty in Ohio had written the same book, would they have been outraged and claimed that was a betrayal? In the end, I suppose all that mattered was that Vance was a Republican and the Republicans are seen by most rural people as the party of Rural America because they see Democrats as The Party of The City People, what more can you say?
As Heather said in her comments, I also appreciate that you read and now have provided this overview of vance's crap that the NY Times dined on. I can't stomach reading any pieces by him or the rest of his ilk. As a matter of fact, I've cancelled my subscription to the NY Times. My money is better spent here. However, I am sorry to say that I had purchased that book. Having grown up poor and ostracized because of my lower class economic standing, I had been mislead to think that he had "something of import" to share (wrong). I put it on a shelf and then realized I had been duped and enjoyed my guiltless toss of it into the garbage before ever opening it.
Yes, the NYTs is so disappointing. I will write their editorial board asking if they plan to cover 'Project 2025' between September and October. I will recommend they do so as a service to the country.
The media seems to have arrived at this point where they don't treat the things he says seriously. Lately, he's been saying he wants to eliminate all early and absentee voting and just have "no excuses" voting on one day, in person. Seems like they just shrug and assume it will never happen (and they're right about that, I hope) so there's no need to look into it further. If it wasn't Trump, it would be considered a major story, they'd be interviewing election officials about the possible impact, and interviewing elderly, disabled people and others who vote absentee to get their responses. Instead, nothing.
JD Vance is a horrible, evil, human being. He is the absolute worst type of person that could have gotten into the Senate.
Ukraine was always a long, hard road, but they are a talented, determined and resourceful people and I'm totally behind giving them every resource we possibly can to help them in their fight against Putin, who was also trying to destroy us as a liberal democracy.
I see I’m not the only one who thinks Vance who hasn’t even completed one term as Senator, would be a logical choice for Trump’s VP pick. As much as I disagreed with Rob Portman, I wished he hadn’t decided not to run again. He had a chance as people in Ohio seem to pull the lever for folks whose name they recognize over and over again..
Vance on the ticket would have them going nuts over here. Sickening, the guy has no soul.. bought and paid for.

In every class struggle there are class traitors. But perhaps in this one JD Vance should be called a classless traitor who, for 20 pieces of silver….

The City People, you know who *nudge nudge*
Absolutely, although, to be fair, they hate me quite a lot too, despite my skin color.
I doubt a lot read it, and I doubt they voted as well. I know my family in the Tennessee Appalachians don’t read books like that nor do they vote..

I wish for JD what he has wished on the people of Ukraine.

Well, as Winston Churchill once said, "Eh, this shit's hard, let's just welcome them on the landing grounds."
Wow, Jared! You sure did call it.
